No disgrace in defeat
Yoxford's young side continue to improve week on week as they put in a spirited performance with both bat and ball in this defeat to a far more experienced East Bergholt side.
Winning the toss for the first time this season gave Yoxford the opportunity to bowl first and Thomas Bond made an early breakthrough courtesy of a sharp slip catch by Steve End.
East Bergholt's number 3 came to the crease, and it was clear from the start that he was going to play some shots. He rode his luck early in his innings before starting to get on top of the far more inexperienced Yoxford bowlers. However, none of them allowed their heads to drop, and he eventually fell the ball after reaching his century, playing one big shot too many and was clean bowled by Steve End. At 172-1, it would have been easy for the game to have got away from them, and leave Yoxford chasing a total in excess of 300, but the second wicket regalvinised the side. Will Driver - bowling his best spell of the season - and Steve End bowled tightly and took 5 wickets between them to leave them a total of 266 to chase.
Realistically, 266 would be a tough ask and this was made even harder by the loss of 3 early wickets. Steve King and Thomas Bond then dopped anchor, determined to ensure Yoxford would bat their full allocation of overs and build a platform to earn a couple of much needed batting points. Scoring at little more than 1.5 runs an over, they showed great discipline and sound technique to frustrate the East Bergholt bowlers. King eventually fell with 15 overs to bowl, but with wickets now in hand, the remaining batsmen had licence to play some shots. Thomas Bond fell for a patient and excellently constructed 38 and cameos from Hugh Orford and Mason Stacey nudged Yoxford closed to the first batting point. This was achieved thanks to some hefty blows from Steve End who, together with Will Driver - backing up his bowling with some confident batting, left East Bergholt 3 wickets short of maximum bowling points as Yoxford finished on 129-7.
