Possibly the youngest team ever to take to the field for a Yoxford first time fixture left Great Bromley with their heads held high despite a seven wicket defeat.
Losing the toss for the second week running, a side including seven players under 17 years old, were asked to bat first on a good looking surface. Despite scoring slowly, Yoxford overcame the loss of a couple of early wickets to be 42-3 with David Driver and son William both looking set. Unfortunately, David's dismissal prompted a collapse to 64 all out, but plenty of positives can be taken with the young team batting for 32 overs. Harry Bond looked confident at the crease, before being unluckily run out and Mason Stacey, Ben Aust and Will Driver all fell to sharp catches which on another day, would have gone to ground.
The talk in the dressing room between innings was positive despite the low total to defend, and this positivity bore fruit from the very first ball of the Great Bromley reply. Their opener pushed the ball to Mid On and set off for quick single only for Tom Driver to run him out with a direct hit to leave the hosts 0-1. Accurate bowling from Thomas Bond, who's late swing prompted plenty of play and misses from the Bromley batters, resulted in two further wickets with less than 30 on the board. David Driver enticing the Bromley number 2 to edge behind the stumps before Thomas Bond earned a deserved wicket when a top edge was caught by wicketkeeper Nigel Binks for his second catch of the innings. No further wickets fell as the home side reached their small total in the 14th over, but the attitude and determination showed in the field bodes well for the rest of the season, with the talented young players looking more than capable of bowling sides out in this division.
